Who says the 2012 Olympics are just taking place in London? That may well be true for those professional sports people but for our four legged athletes the chance to compete is a lot closer to home. On Sunday 1st July Worthing plays host to the exciting Doggie Olympics which are open to all local dogs and owners, and takes place at Hillbarn Recreational Ground, Hillbarn Lane, off Upper Brighton Rd from 1pm. This year’s fun event is organised by Grove Lodge Vets, who have their 24 hour animal hospital based in Worthing, as well as six other branches across Sussex including their brand new clinic in Southwick. All sorts of activities for you and your pooch are on offer, including agility, terrier racing, an obedience circuit, and fun dog show. Classes include Golden Oldies (over 10yr dogs), hurdles (pictured), best trick, egg and spoon/toy carrying race, waggiest tail, dog that looks most like it’s owner, as well as kids’ fancy dress, and sack race with owner in the sack and your dog on a lead! Classes will be just £2 to enter with all proceeds going to Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service (WADARS) who rescue and rehabilitate wildlife, as well as rescuing and rehoming pets. Grove Lodge Vets principle vet Andrew Ash, who’ll be one of the judges on the day says “Grove Lodge Vets are proud to offer our dog-loving community the chance to enjoy the spirit of this year’s Olympics as well as promoting pet health at the same time. The benefits of exercise to both humans and dogs alike are clear so why not come along, get involved, and have fun with your four-legged friend at the same time!” As well as the games and dog show there’ll also be hot food and ice creams on sale too.
