Which category is best for me?
If you are looking for an opening within the veterinary field, look carefully at the following categories to see which one is appropriate for you.
- Veterinary Surgeons
A qualified veterinary surgeon who is permitted to work in the United Kingdom having registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons ( an MRCVS) and who is employed by a private or corporate veterinary practice, or by an animal welfare charity.
- Animal Behaviourists
(Not necessarily a veterinary surgeon) treats behavioural problems in animals. They should hold a recognised qualification.
- Commercial Appointments
May be as representatives (salespersons) for veterinary drug companies. (veterinary nurses often move into this field) or veterinary surgeons employed by drug companies in research or otherwise.
- Interships/House Surgeons
Employed in junior clinical posts for a limited time in the University veterinary school hospitals - often the forerunner to an academic career. An MRCVS is required.
- Locum Veterinary Surgeons
Qualified veterinary surgeons providing temporary cover in the absence of a practice principal or assistant in case of absence through illness or holiday.
- Locum Veterinary Nurses
Nurses providing temporary cover for practice nurses.
- Veterinary Nurses
Posts are available for unqualified nurses (ancillary staff whose areas of activity are very limited) , for trainee nurses, for fully qualified nurses whose names are on the list maintained by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, or holders of the advanced Diploma in veterinary nursing. Nurses are employed in private veterinary practice, in University veterinary schools and by animal welfare charities.
- Practice Managers
Non veterinary surgeons who take responsibility for the administraton of a veterinary practice. They should hold or aspire to hold the qualification awarded by the Veterinary Practice Management Association. This is often a career move for veterinary nurses.
- Receptionists
The 'front line' contact for clients going into a veterinary practice, hospital, or animal welfare charity. They often carry out general office duties. Whereas no qualification is required, a pleasant manner and communication skills are essential.
- Academic Appointments
These cover teaching appointments in the university veterinary schools and other animal orientated courses in a number of colleges. The requirement may be for veterinary surgeons, nurses or those with other relevant qualifications eg physiotherapy.
- Clinical and Laboratory Technicians
Trainee or qualified people to work in veterinary laboratories.
- Radiographers
Holders of a recognised qualification wishing to work with animals.
- Clinical and Laboratory Technicians
Trainee or qualified people to work in veterinary laboratories.
- Trainees / Volunteers / Non-qualified
People wishing to get into the veterinary industry, who don't have any formal veterinary or nursing qualifications. Practices quite often look for these kinds of people so it's a good place to start.
