This interactive one-day face-to-face course will provide relevant and practical information on the clinical management of small animal oncology cases seen in general practice. The aim of the course will be to enhance clinical skills and knowledge and improve delegate’s confidence when dealing with what can be both mentally and emotionally challenging cases. We will provide updates on the ways to diagnose cancer and the surgical and medical management strategies. Using clinical case examples we will discuss the principles of diagnosis and management of some of the more common small animal cancers.

Topics covered:

Sampling masses; fine needle aspirates, core biopsies, excisional biopsies – when, what and how?

The principles and practical practice of surgical oncology

The use of chemotherapy and radiotherapy in managing the cancer patient

Case examples to illustrate the diagnosis and management of some of the common cancer types

The ethical issues of cancer care

By the end of the course delegates should be able to:

The indications and contra-indications for fine needle aspirates, core, incisional and excisional biopsies
The basic principles of surgical resection of tumours, and the importance of surgical margins
The indications for chemotherapy and radiotherapy
The investigation and management of some common cancer types
Ethical issue surround animals with cancer
