About the CourseWouldnt it be great if we could talk to animals like Dr Dolittle? It would make our role as veterinary professionals and animal advocates so much easier. As humans, our primary method of communication is speech and thus we are hardwired to listen with our ears. However, studies on communication have found that our non-verbal communication accounts for more of the messages we are trying to convey (Mehrabian, 1981). Recognising these non-verbal cues is tricky in humans and perhaps even more challenging in animals but is necessary in order to interpret, understand and resolve health and behavioural issues in our companion animals. This course is designed to give you the skills to listen with your eyes and enable you to provide better care to your patients and pets through the recognition and understanding of species specific communication signals. Evidence-based skills and knowledge you will acquire on this course: A basic understanding of affective systems (neuroscience) and the emotional drivers behind behaviourInterpretation of body language of companion species including cats, dogs and rabbitsContext specific behaviour associated with health issues and pain

The Speakers

Donna FisherDonna has worked within the animal industry for over 20 years and has worked with a number of different animals during her career including a variety of marine mammals, parrots as well as companion species. Her main area of interest is human behaviour change for animal welfare. This is a developing area of study and deals with the human-animal bond and the psychology behind altering and changing people thoughts, perceptions and behaviours towards their animals. This was one of the reasons for pursuing a career as an educator. She currently works at an institute in Surrey where she teaches animal behaviour and nursing to the next generation of animal carers.Qualifications: Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Veterinary) from the Royal Veterinary College MSc Clinical Animal Behaviour from the University of Lincoln Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing from Harper Adams University College BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing from Middlesex University Veterinary Nursing NVQ Level 2 and 3 from Medivet Training College C-SQP from AMTRA Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism
