The emergency patient can be a stressful presentation in practice; requiring prompt triage and stabilisation. Nurses can play a pivotal role in ensuring these patients are dealt with in a controlled, effective and efficient manner from initial assessment at triage through emergency stabilisation and ultimately in the specific management of their condition.This course will enable you to perform a complete and thorough triage examination, make decisions on oxygen therapy requirements and be able to confidently implement fluid therapy and blood transfusion plans; whilst providing you with a clear understanding of shock and transfusion medicine.Topics to be covered include:Triage: emergency assessment of the major body systems and capsule history takingFluid resuscitation: what to give, how much to give and whenShock: assessment and treatmentAnalgesia for the emergency patientOxygen therapyTransfusion medicine: cross matching, blood typing, blood products and protocols
