This course will look at dealing with the presentation of emergency patient and how we can accurately assess and prioritise treatment for patients, along with looking at some common organ system presentations and specific indications for treatment, including the placement of tubes and drains. Module 1: Triage and Initial Patient Assessment: Being proficient in the art of triage is essential for any member of veterinary staff. Emergency patients can present at any time so it is vital that staff are both confident and competent in dealing with them promptly and effectively. This module will take a step-by-step approach to the assessment and stabilisation of these patients including: Major body system assessment, Clinical examination of patients, Prioritisation of patients. Module 2: Shock and Emergency Fluid Therapy: This module looks at shock and what it means, the pathophysiology behind the different types of shock and how patients are assessed using different parameters and the very different approaches to treatment. The lecture will clarify these different types of shock and the approaches taken to correct the deficits. Module 3: Dealing with respiratory emergencies: Dealing with the respiratory emergency can be a stressful time for all. This module will look at the recognition of respiratory distress and respiratory fatigue, and the methods of assessing ventilation and oxygenation, as well as techniques for stabilisation of these patients. Delegates will gain an understanding and improved confidence in: Recognising and localising respiratory disease, Selecting and performing emergency oxygen administration techniques, Placing and maintaining chest drains and tracheostomy tubes. Module 4: Nursing Care of the Renal and Urinary Emergency: Patients with renal and urinary disease can vary from animals with drug or toxin induced acute kidney disease, to the blocked cat. This module will review renal physiology, discuss the difference between acute and chronic kidney disease and how to manage these disease processes correctly. Understand the difference between acute and chronic kidney disease, including the treatment of anuria, oliguria and polyuria. Gain knowledge on the managing the blocked patient. Learn how to deal with the uroabdomen patient. Module 5: Dealing with traumatic wounds and fractures. This module will allow staff to deal with wounds, and make decisions in their treatment, with more confidence. This module will include: how to deal with wounds on initial patient presentation, which lavage fluids, options for wound debridement, and discuss the options for dressing open wounds.
