This course looks at specific organ system disorders of common emergency presentations including some aspects of their diagnosis which nursing staff are likely to be involved in, along with other essential aspects of emergency and critical care nursing such as effective pain scoring and commonly used analgesics as well as how to effectively perform CPR. Module 1: Dealing with the Endocrine Emergency: The patient with endocrine disease can present at any time, irrespective of the type of clinic you work in, but rapid and effective treatment of these patients is paramount in order to gain a successful outcome. This module will cover a variety of endocrine disease including diabetic ketoacidosis, Addisonian crisis and hypoglycaemia. Delegates will gain improved knowledge and understanding of: Normal fluid and electrolyte movements, Recognition and monitoring of fluid therapy complications, How to assess and stabliise the emergency endocrine patient. Module 2: Dealing with the Head Trauma Patient: Head trauma patients are commonly seen in veterinary practice, and the treatment of these patients can prove challenging. In order to achieve a positive outcome in these cases, they required intensive treatment and nursing care and close attention to monitoring. This module includes the use of videos to allow the delegates to perform small animal coma scoring, to gain a better understanding of how this procedure is performed. Module 3: Dealing with the Cardiac Patient: Nursing the cardiac patient can often be very stressful, along with determining the underlying cause of the patients issue. This module will recap cardiac physiology along with looking at commonly encountered diseases such as feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy and pericardial effusion as well as looking at diagnostic procedures such as ECGs and the diagnosis of arrhythmias. Module 4: Analgesia and Pain Scoring: This module will focus on pain management and the use of analgesic drugs available. We will look at the recognition of pain, pain pathways, perioperative analgesia, as well as pain scoring. Module 5: CPR: This module will look at the latest RECOVER Veterinary CPR recommendations and how these guidelines can be applied practically in the crash situation. We will take a step by step approach to CPR in order to improve outcome and we will look at how monitoring can be used to assess the efficacy of CPR being performed.
