Our RCVS Guide to professional conduct requires us to provide first aid and emergency care to any patient of any species. Whilst a daytime veterinary facility can often onward refer an exotic animal patient, this is not generally an option for an ECC OOH colleague. This course is designed for just such a colleague, who is likely to be faced with species with whom they are not familiar, but where they are obliged to make life changing decisions. The course will comprise a run through of all common OOH exotic animal presentations, whilst the second day will concentrate on practical aspects of handling, sampling, anaesthesia and other ECC procedures in these patients.
The aim of this course is to dispel the unknown from the treatment of exotic patients OOH.
On day one, we will be covering common presented conditions in hamsters (cheek pouch eversion, wet tail, hibernation, supportive care), guinea-pigs (enterotoxaemia, dental disease, UTI, pregnancy and dystokia, scurvy and supportive care), rabbits (GI Stasis and SI obstruction, dental disease, respiratory disease, CNS, urinary tract disease, myiasis and supportive care), birds (respiratory disease, crop impaction, cloacal prolapse, egg binding, trauma and blood loss, feeding tubes and supportive care), ferrets (insulinoma, adrenal disease, cardiomyopathy, gastric FB and support care) and reptiles (husbandry issues including metabolic bone disease, respiratory disease, stomatitis, cloacal prolapse, egg binding, pharyngostomy tube placement and supportive care), then finishing off with important aspects of the care of wildlife casualties.
It goes without saying that this is a vast subject area, but we are just aiming to help the OOH companion animal vet, introducing them to what they need to know, to meet their professional responsibilities, when presented with these species out of hours.
On day two, we will be covering practical aspects, with hands in training.
Gavage feeding birds, pharyngostomy tube placements reptiles, naso-gastric tube placements in rabbits, plastronectomies in tortoise, tortoise post trauma shell repair, entubation and tracheotomy tube placements in rabbits. Placement of indwelling catheters in all species.
