Speaker: Louise O'Dwyer MBA BSc(Hons) VTS(Anesthesia/Analgesia, & ECC) DipAVN (Medical & Surgical) RVNThis course will look at various different aspects, and considerations, for infection control. Areas such as theatre, including staff attire, and patient preparation will be covered, we will also look at hand hygiene, products available to use, cleaning and disinfection, including the selection of disinfections and also antibiotic use and misuse, and the incidence of multidrug resistant infections. Wound management will also be discussed, with a focus on using topical antimicrobial dressings, as well as looking at dealing with infectious diseases within the clinic.Learning outcomes:Understand the principles of biosecurity and creating an infection control (biosecurity) strategyReview of the importance of effective hand hygiene aims, how it can be achieved, suitability of productsPersonal protective equipment how to select appropriate PPE, how it should be used (and removed)Costs associated with HAIs and the importance of carrying out surveillanceRecognise the importance of barrier nursing and creating an effective isolation ward for dealing with infectious patients

The Speakers

Speaker: Louise O'Dwyer MBA BSc(Hons) VTS(AnesthesiaAnalgesia, ECC) DipAVN (Medical Surgical) RVNLouise currently works as Clinical Support Manager for VetsNow and is based at their 247 Emergency and Specialty Hospital in Manchester. Louise gained her Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Surgical) in 2004 followed by her Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Medical) in 2007 and Veterinary Technician Specialist (Emergency and Critical Care) in 2011 and Veterinary Technician Specialist (Anaesthesia) in 2014. In 2016 she was the recipient of the prestigious Bruce Vivash Jones Veterinary Nurse Golden Jubilee Award by the RCVS for exceptional contribution to veterinary nursing. Louise became President of the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians in September 2018.
