About the CourseThe immune system, immune-mediated diseases and the nursing considerations of immuno-compromised patients.This 5 hour CPD session will cover the immune system, immune-mediated diseases of small animals and the nursing considerations of immunocompromised and immunosuppressed patients.There will be an introduction and recap over the immune system, how it develops in dogs and cats and how it should work. We will discuss the various types of white blood cell and how these each play their own role in managing infection and disease.The use of antibiotics in practice will be discussed including how they work, the types available, when to use what and current guidelines for their use.We will then discuss what happens when the immune system goes wrong. Two common immune-mediated diseases will be covered, including immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia and immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. We will discuss the disease process of these conditions, treatment options and nursing care and considerations for these patients.Lastly we will discuss the ongoing nursing care and considerations of immunocompromised and immunosuppressed patients in the hospital. This will include topics such as barrier nursing, nutrition and the use of feeding tubes, peripheral and central catheter placement, urinary bladder catheterisation, blood smears and TLC.

The Speakers
Louise WelshLouise qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in 2012, having trained in a first opinion practice. Here I enjoyed the variety of the role and especially running my own nurse rabbit clinics in welfare and nutrition and performing dental checks. After becoming interested in referral nursing I left my first opinion practice and started working at North Downs Specialist Referrals in Surrey, where I spent a year as a rotating nurse learning about all aspects of referral nursing. I later became a static surgery ward nurse and helped to organise the treatment and care of the surgical patients.Having always enjoyed the nursing of critical patients I left NDSR in 2014 and began working at the Royal Veterinary College as an Emergency and Critical Care RVN. This role has by far been the most challenging that I have embarked upon but I love the diversity of cases, the amazing team I work with and the nursing care that we are able to provide to our patients. I now work as a Senior ECC RVN and am responsible for helping the head nurses organise and develop the nursing team. In my spare time I work as a tutor for the Vets Now ECC Certificate, helping to mark student assignments and answer any questions they may have. I write articles for veterinary journals and enjoy being able to pass on my knowledge and continue to learn more about emergency and critical care nursing. I enjoy all aspects of ECC nursing but am particularly passionate about the exciting and extremely important role of the RVN in helping these patients to recover.
