Nursing Care Of Elderly Cats: Maintaining Health And Improving Welfare
Central CPD

Date: Thursday 30th November, 2023
Start time: 10:00 AM
Cost: £195
Older cats are more likely to suffer from various (and often multiple) health conditions and increasingly there is an awareness that proactive assessment of senior and super senior cats is key in recognising these conditions, allowing treatment to be instigated at an early stage. There are now well-established guidelines on the regular monitoring that we should be providing for these patients and nurses are well placed for taking an active role in providing this gold standard care.
This course will cover the different health issues associated with the ageing feline, provision of species-appropriate nursing care and how best to support owners when caring for them at home. By looking at the body system changes that occur in elderly cats, veterinary nurse’s will gain a greater understanding of their patient’s requirements and by exploring the common behavioural changes we can help ensure that both the clinic and home environment are ‘elderly-cat friendly’.
Topics to be covered include:
Implementation of geriatric screening in practice
Super senior nurse clinics – busting the ‘she’s just getting old’ myth
Common chronic diseases seen in super senior cats and the proactive role veterinary nurse can play in their management: including chronic kidney disease, cognitive dysfunction syndrome, dental disease, osteoarthritis and hyperthyroidism
Nutrition for super senior cats
Nursing and handling elderly feline patients in the clinic
Anaesthetic considerations for the senior patient
Providing client education on caring for elderly cats at home
Supporting owners with end of life care and bereavement
