Emergency cases can be stressful, especially in a busy first opinion practice that may not have all the fancy equipment or enough staff to deal with these cases that often require intensive nursing and treatment. This interactive course will present an overview of the common emergencies encountered in first opinion practice, helping you play an effective role in the care of these patients. Case-based discussions will be used throughout to further your knowledge and understanding of the physiology, causes, treatment, complications, and management of these challenging and rewarding cases.Topics to be covered include:The blocked cat: causes, adverse reactions, treatment, long term management & client educationGDV: physiology, pre-op stabilisation and monitoring, long term management and preventionThe collapsed patient: triage, primary assessment, monitoring and investigationAcute renal failure: chronic vs acute onset, ruling out pre/post-renal, acute on chronic, causes of ARF, monitoring and managementDiabetic ketoacidosis: physiology, causes, diagnosis, insulin protocols, monitoring, long term management and client educationAnaemia/IMHA: accurate history taking, examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of IMHA and infectious, toxic, congenital and haemorrhagic causes of anaemia. As well as identifying primary and secondary coagulopathies and treatment optionsThe parvo puppy: physiology, diagnosis, rates of infection and transmission, treatment, nutritional support and owner education and future preventionFading neonate: definition and prevention, the big three killers, infectious & non-infectious causes, treatment, and prevention
