In recent years, specialised veterinary oncology care has become more common, and there are many more options for patients diagnosed with cancer. Veterinary nurses are integral to caring for these patients: not only are they instrumental in administering chemotherapy and providing oncology nursing care, but they are well placed to provide support and education for pet owners. As in human oncology healthcare, there is real scope for veterinary nurses to lead oncology services, ensuring all cancer patients receive gold-standard care. This one-day course is designed for nurses that have an interest in oncology and wish to advance their knowledge, whether they are in primary care or a referral setting. The course will address common cancer types seen in practice, management of these cases, health and safety considerations, and the practicalities of chemotherapy administration. Communication with pet owners will also be discussed, including provision of compassionate end-of-life care.Topics to be covered include:Common tumours seen in practice and their managementChemotherapy health and safety for the veterinary team, safe administration of chemotherapy and care for cytotoxic patients in the hospital setting.Chemotherapy health and safety for the client at homeChemotherapy side-effects and supportive treatmentQuality of life assessment and end of life care
