Start time: 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM
Cost: £495

Frustrated by waiting for results from the lab? Wondering whether those results from your in-house analyser can be trusted? In an emergency setting, prompt clinical diagnosis is essential for starting appropriate therapy, but you can be left waiting more than 24 hours for results from an external laboratory.

This highly practical course will give you the skills you need to use in-house microscopy to gain a useful diagnosis faster and thus start appropriate therapy as soon as possible. Using real case based examples and dedicating a large proportion of the day to wet lab and microscopy sessions, this course will cover accurate interpretation of blood smears, a standardised approach to urinalysis as well as how to get diagnostic cytology samples and when to interpret them. Common errors and pitfalls will also be covered along with fundamental microscope set up.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED INCLUDE:
Microscope set up – brief overview of how to use it effectively
Haematology – making and staining diagnostic smears, with recognition of artefacts to check analyser results
Urinalysis – staining, sediment exam and identification of bacteria
Cytology – top tips for sampling and making diagnostic smears for staining, interpretation of ear samples and common skin masses, as well as accurately diagnosing pyothorax and septic peritonitis
Case-based interpretation of biochemistry results from your analyser – what does that result mean?
