This one-day course will explore how to be safe in equine practice, through a mixture of lectures and practical sessions.
The first sessions of the day will look at the health and safety risks of equine practice with ways to mitigate these for common procedures such as scoping and nerve blocking; horse handling techniques; minimising radiation risks and avoiding zoonoses.
The next sessions of the day will look at the Practice Standards Scheme (PSS). PSS can be daunting but it provides all the requirements and best practice standards for equine practice. The PSS is constantly evolving and this course integrates solutions found by veterinary surgeons in practice to provide members with practical ways of complying with the requirements.
The course will provide a forum for delegates to raise concerns about safety in their own practice and share practical solutions.
The course will also look at various safety aspects for lone working and driving, and the day will be rounded off with an extreme weather driving session at Goodwood racetrack (please note that all participants must hold a full UK driving licence or non-UK equivalent to participate in the driving session).
Please note there is a maximum of 20 places available on this course.

To develop and discuss practical changes to situations known to be dangerous
Techniques to cope with extreme weather conditions from a professional driving instructor
