This course aims to take a focused practical approach to the recognition of life-threatening conditions and their stabilisation in first opinion practice. We will look at initial assessment, diagnosis and stabilisation of common emergency presentations using the facilities typically available. The course will cover diagnostics, highlighting common pitfalls in practice and discuss useful tips to help you feel more confident when treating the emergency patient!Topics to be covered include: Triage, major body system assessment, and prioritising treatmentApproach and stabilisation of the dyspnoeic patientFluid therapy for shock: what are we trying to achieve? How, when, and with which fluid?The trauma patient; what are our priorities?Urinary tract emergencies in cats and dogs.
