Date: Wednesday 10th May, 2023
Start time: 10:00 AM
Cost: £245

Transfusion medicine in veterinary practice has become increasingly more common and is continually developing. Sourcing blood products can sometimes be challenging and adverse reactions when transfusing them can be life threatening, so the task of providing them can seem daunting. However, transfusion patients can be some of the most rewarding cases for nurses to care for.

Using both theory and practical sessions, this interactive course is designed to provide nurses with the tools to confidently manage transfusion patients, understand component therapy and blood compatibility, and will provide a working knowledge of how to perform blood donations safely and effectively.

Topics to be covered include:

Canine and feline blood donation
Blood typing and crossmatching
Component therapy and storage requirements
Blood products and preparation for transfusion
Preparing the patient for transfusion
Identifying transfusion reactions
Exploring the different types of anaemia and transfusion patients seen in veterinary practice with case-based discussions
Alternative transfusion therapies including xenotransfusions and autotransfusions.
N.B- A practical session on blood typing will involve donation of blood samples. Bring along your own pet’s blood sample if you would like to find out their blood type.
