Celia Hammond Animal Trust

Tania Heap

Lewisham, London, United Kingdom

Animal Rescue Officer – Lewisham rescue centre – Full-time hours over 5 days - Monday – Sunday each week

The Celia Hammond Animal Trust (CHAT) is based in London and the South East and seek to improve the lives of stray and pet animals through the provision of affordable low cost veterinary services and a rescue and homing service for stray, feral, unwanted and abandoned cats. The charity focuses much of it's resources and efforts on the provision of neutering of stray and feral cats and owned pets as a humane solution to reducing the numbers unwanted animals who are born as a result of uncontrolled breeding.

We are seeking someone to join our team who is completely passionate about the work we do and is totally dedicated to improving the lives of thousands of stray and needy cats. This is not 'just a job'. It is an opportunity for someone who really cares to come and work with us to try and make a difference.

This role includes the trapping, neuter and return of stray and feral cat colonies, investigating reports of cruelty or neglect, collection of unwanted pets, rescue of sick and injured strays and working within local communities to resolve welfare problems such as multi-cat households where cats are breeding uncontrolled.

There will also be involvement in the care of the rescued animals – settling them in when they arrive as well as working with colleagues on the animal care team and homing teams to help to provide the best care for the cats during their stay with us and to help find and match them to suitable new homes. Good administration skills will also be required.

The Celia Hammond Animal Trust has a strict non-destruction policy (unless animals are terminally ill, hopelessly injured, suffering and beyond any veterinary help). The Trust also provides care, refuge and rehoming for cats and kittens both feral and domestic and for animals which on the basis of age, temperament or appearance may not receive help elsewhere.

We will provide 'on the job' training, particularly with regard to working with feral cats.

Previous experience with cats is essential, preference will be given to candidates who have /worked or volunteered for an animal rescue organisation.

Although predominantly working with animals, this role also involves a lot of interaction with members of the public and within the local community, therefore good communication skills and patience and understanding when working with a wide variety of different people is also very important.

The successful applicant needs to be a calm and patient person who is determined to resolve each rescue mission successfully, a quick thinker, a practical person who can plan their work in advance and also respond to urgent requirements, someone who is happy working on their own but also gets on well with others. Above all you must be dedicated to making a difference and improving the lives of suffering animals in the areas where C.H.A.T works.

A flexible approach to working hours will be required including weekends. A full driving licence is required and a charity vehicle (small van) is provided.
