Veterinary Internship Opportunity - Poultry Health Services
Poultry Health Services
Sheriff Hutton, York, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
An opportunity for career progression and the chance to make a difference to the health and welfare of production animals?
We have an exciting opportunity for a candidate to join our young and vibrant team on a training programme or an internship within Poultry Health Services (PHS). Poultry is the most innovative and dynamic sector in modern agriculture, and PHS recognises its responsibility to ensure the sector is serviced by a modern, efficient, and forward-thinking Veterinary service. PHS offers internationally acclaimed Veterinary care for all poultry keepers, backed by a full range of diagnostic capabilities as required by modern poultry keepers.
The team delivers high quality services across large and small layers, broiler producers, and gamebirds. PHS is the only primary breeder and hatchery specialists in the UK. The company has UK and international clients in Russia, Kenya, Zambia, and Brazil.
Some of the qualifications that our veterinarians have include Certificates in Poultry Medicine and Production, Certificate in Welfare Ethics and Law, Certificate in Laboratory Animal Science, an MBA and Masters in Meat Science and Technology. We are also proud of having trained the first European Diplomate in Poultry Medicine in 2013. PHS acts as Veterinary consultants for several poultry operations in the UK including:
- Broiler breeders
- Commercial layers
- Layer breeders
- Layer replacements.
At the end of the internship or training programme, the successful applicant will have achieved a good working knowledge of the structure of the poultry industry, from breeding through to processing in all domestic poultry species. An understanding of the relationship between bird health and welfare, farm management, nutrition, biosecurity, cleaning and disinfection procedures, and vaccination procedures will also be gained. We offer a dedicated mentoring process to ensure you meet your training goals. During your time with the group, you will achieve sufficient working knowledge of the available databases and software to interpret and input clinical data and develop the ability to generate the necessary reports and treatment regimens for the business they are working with.
As part of the role, PHS employees are lucky to be able to go on fully sponsored CPD trips, a couple of examples of what they may be are below:
- Launch of new products or vaccines - take place in any European City or in the UK and include a technical day and a social agenda with visits to places such as the National Space Centre or the Zoo.
- Gut health workshops for poultry veterinarians from European Countries which are hosted by the university of Ghent in Belgium. The workshop focuses on the consequences, diagnosis and monitoring of coccidiosis, and applying the appropriate coccidiosis control program using anticoccidial products and vaccines. It includes a hands-on session where the participants are trained to evaluate coccidiosis and dysbacteriosis lesions in broilers and turkeys. The trip also includes a social programme and sightseeing.
In addition to this we offer attendance to the British Veterinary Association meetings (in the UK, 3 times a year).
Hear from our team themselves:
“Poultry health was such a small part of my degree that I hadn’t really considered it as a career, but my internship is giving me so many opportunities and I’m really excited to find out where my career will take me. Due to the size of this sector of the veterinary world there are good opportunities to progress. PHS is growing all the time and looking to expand into new locations, so a graduate who joins as an intern could go on to head up their own practice!”
Another employee states:
“As a newly qualified vet I feel supported every step of the way. I spend a lot of time with my mentors, who are senior poultry vets, and started out shadowing them on client visits. Every day I’m learning something new, and I’ve already been given the opportunity to take on more responsibility, which I’m really enjoying”.
