The diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a widespread pathogen in rabbits will be the focus of a free webinar by Dechra Veterinary Products in November.

The Challenges of E. cuniculi (Encephalitozoon cuniculi) will be examined by Joanna Hedley, BVM&S DZooMed (Reptilian) DipECZM (Herpetology) MRCVS, a Lecturer in Exotic Species and Small Mammal Medicine and Surgery, during the free online session on November 23 at 7pm.

E. cuniculi is an obligate intracellular pathogen that can cause a number of clinical problems in rabbits, including neurological and kidney disease. It has been shown to infect 52 per cent of domestic rabbits in the UK¹ through spores that are spread in urine from an infected rabbit and are then eaten or, less commonly, inhaled to infect another rabbit.

It can also be transmitted from a mother to her young during pregnancy.

Dechra’s Exotics Brand Manager, Carol Morgan, said: “Of the 52 per cent of rabbits that are infected, only some will present with the clinical disease so it can be hard for veterinary professionals to diagnose and treat appropriately.

“The webinar will discuss the clinical signs, how to prepare a diagnostic plan and the interpretation of E. cuniculi serology. Joanna has vast experience in this area and this will be a very useful session for all veterinary professionals, specifically those specialising in small mammals.”

Joanna Hedley qualified from Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 2003 and spent time in mixed, small animal, exotic and wildlife practice before undertaking a residency in Exotic Animal and Wildlife medicine back at R(D)SVS where she obtained her RCVS Diploma in Zoological Medicine.

She is currently lecturing at the Royal Veterinary College in London, where she is developing the exotics clinical service and student teaching.
