The Medical Director is responsible for providing overall clinical leadership, medical governance, and professional oversight of the veterinary hospital.
The role ensures that all veterinary services are delivered to a consistently high clinical and ethical standard while maintaining patient safety, animal welfare, regulatory compliance, effective clinical workflows, and strong collaboration between veterinarians, veterinary nurses, technicians, and hospital management.
The Medical Director will act as the senior clinical authority within the hospital and will be responsible for developing clinical standards, supporting veterinarians in complex cases, monitoring quality of care, and ensuring that medical decisions remain evidence-based and aligned with accepted veterinary practice.
The Medical Director will work closely with the Business Director and management team while maintaining clear separation between clinical authority and administrative/operational authority.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide overall clinical leadership and medical oversight
• Supervise, mentor, and support veterinarians and clinical teams
• Establish and maintain clinical protocols, SOPs, and treatment standards
• Oversee patient safety, quality assurance, and medical governance
• Review complex, critical, and high-risk cases when required
• Conduct clinical audits and monitor medical record standards
• Lead case discussions, clinical meetings, and continuing education initiatives
• Oversee standards relating to surgery, anesthesia, hospitalization, emergency care, diagnostics, and infection control
• Support recruitment, onboarding, competency assessment, and development of veterinarians
• Review significant clinical incidents and recommend corrective actions
• Provide medical input into equipment, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and new clinical services
• Work closely with hospital management while maintaining clear clinical governance and professional accountability
• Support the investigation and resolution of medically related client complaints
• Promote evidence-based veterinary medicine, ethical practice, and excellent standards of animal welfare
Preferred:
• Postgraduate qualifications or advanced veterinary certifications
• Experience in a multidisciplinary or referral-level veterinary hospital
• Experience implementing clinical SOPs, audits, and quality improvement programs
• Experience mentoring and developing veterinarians and veterinary nurses
