Veterinary Surgeon Required At Congleton Vets
3 months ago
up to £60,000 depending on qualification/experience
Congelton, Cheshire, United Kingdom
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a confident Veterinary Surgeon to join our friendly and supportive team here at Congleton Vets!
Your week is spread across days on consults (seeing a mix of reviews and on-day sick pets, as well as routine vaccines/6-month checks), and a day in theatre (sometimes two, depending on rota requirements). Having some experience in these duties is important.
Theatre day involves morning admits, then surgery time, and then consults/discharges not starting until 5 pm. Consult days include protected admin time distributed throughout your consulting sessions. The practice is closed between 1-2 pm on weekdays, to ensure everyone gets a well-deserved break/lunch/wellness hour. One vet (Vaccine AM) is on duty (with AM consult nurse) during this hour, in case of emergency (prescription requests sorted during this hour). Lunchtime for duty vet 2-3 pm. The last consult is 6.15 pm, with one vet each day rostered to see any end-of-day emergencies (rare!).
Permanent part-time, or full-time considered for the right candidate, and/or 3-month locum cover required May-July 2023. 20-30 hours over 2-3 weekdays (Monday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday), and with shared weekend rota shifts either included in these hours, or as part of a calculated average working week which includes these in addition to weekday obligations, or just solely on an ad hoc basis to help cover sickness and holidays. Shifts around school timings also considered, depending on work type preference. No OOH. Also available is short term cover for one of our vets taking a sabbatical to travel, May to July 2023. Her current shifts include consults Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and theatre on Fridays. The opportunity for surgical and medical case involvement, or medical only if that is preferred.
Phones go over (to Vets Now) at 6.45 pm, and practice closes at 7 pm. Free to go from 7 pm if all messages and tasks are complete. We are open Saturdays and Sundays. Saturdays 2 vets on in the morning, 1 solely for pre-booked vaccines and 6-month checks (finishes 12.30 pm), the other for on-day appointments, working until close (4 pm). Sundays, sole charge (1 vet, 1 nurse), emergencies only (4-hour shift). Flexibility is available for part-time e.g., starting later, finishing earlier, reduced days etc. Sharing weekend rota is preferred to help maintain practice services and fairness across the team. Vets receive time off in lieu of weekend shifts, so that contracted weekly hours are not exceeded (equating to extra weekday off after working full weekend, and afternoon off prior to Saturday morning shift).
The salary for the role is up to £60,000 (FTE) depending on qualification/experience.
We are a growing small animal practice (also see a fair number of exotics!). Silver Cat (and Rabbit) Friendly. Purpose-built practice within a thriving retail park on the outskirts of Congleton. Dental x-ray (IM3), microconvex and phased array ultrasound probes (Imotek MyLab 5), bipolar electrocautery, Bair hugger warming devices, oxygen chamber, well-equipped in-house lab (Idexx ProCyte and Catalyst One, EPOC, V2000, and Clotting). We strive to work together as a team, to provide the best service and veterinary care that we possibly can. We care about each other and treat each other with respect and empathy. We want everyone to excel in their careers and enjoy coming to work each day and developing our skills. Congleton is close to Manchester, Liverpool, and Birmingham, for those city-lovers. And for those who prefer the great outdoors, we border the Peak District, and the coast is a short drive away. There are great transport links to major motorways, railway lines, as well as international airports.
About the Team and Culture
Currently, 5 vets, seeking a 6th or 7th! Supported by 5 fantastic nurses, 3 students, as well as 6 receptionists, and 1 practice manager. Two of our vets are studying towards certificates (cardiology and ophthalmology), and this is actively encouraged and supported. CPD is planned and reviewed, with teachings implemented as much as possible. We have regular team and clinical meetings, including discussing any significant events using a no-blame culture. Our CD is part of the clinical team, and has regular 1-2-1 check-ins with vets, to ensure they're supported and happy at work. For more challenging cases, we're fortunate to have excellent peripatetic surgeons who work alongside us (orthopaedics, ultrasonography, endoscopy, and soft tissue surgery), as well as many state-of-the-art referral centres (Pride, Lime Trees, Vets Now Manchester, Dovecote, SATH). Within our local group of practices, we have CT available within a 10-mile radius, and hydrotherapy.
Our ideal candidate is an experienced vet, competent in routine neuters (cats, dogs, and rabbits) and soft tissue surgery, is comfortable performing an ex-lap single-handedly (with support available depending on findings), have a good understanding and awareness of x-ray views and interpretation (albeit support is always on-hand), basic understanding and abilities for ultrasonography (although happy to teach and help develop this skill, where needed), and be able to perform routine dentistry, including taking dental x-rays and performing simple extractions (again, training and guidance available). They should have excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy interacting with clients. It goes without saying, that they should love animals, and be kind and warm when examining any patients. Up-to-date knowledge, and a passion to maintain and apply this is essential. We're always striving to do better and ensure that we're performing veterinary medicine at the highest level. Above all, we're looking for a good team player, someone who works hard and gives their colleagues the same support that they receive. A sense of humour and a smile are also key characteristics.
