We are looking for a Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon to join our team on a 12-month FTC, this is a full-time position, although we are open to discussing flexible working options.
We are a VetPartners practice, with our main hospital in Colne; a consulting branch in Barnoldswick; and a consulting and operating branch in Burnley. Established in 1911, we offer high-quality, first-opinion veterinary care to small animals in the stunning area of East Lancashire.
Why Apply?
- We are a large team with varied experience, including certificate holders in medicine, dentistry and ECC. Several of our nursing team also hold certificates in ECC, anaesthesia, feline nursing, feline medicine, dentistry, and physiotherapy.
- We provide 24-hour care for our clients and inpatients with 3 dedicated night RVNs (2 of whom have ECC certificates) who take the phones overnight for our on-call vets.
- Our main branch in Colne is well-equipped with digital x-ray, ultrasound machine, flexible & rigid endoscopy, two surgical theatres with multiparameter monitors and a dental suite with dental x-ray machine. We also have an extensive in-house laboratory, 4 consulting rooms and a designated bereavement room, as well as separate canine and feline inpatient wards.
- There is a varied high caseload, allowing for progression in many areas of veterinary practice.
- Salary in the range of £40,000 – £60,000, depending on experience.
- We actively encourage CPD and further education, with a generous £1700 CPD budget and 5 paid days off per annum (pro rata), certificates are encouraged and can be funded.
- RCVS membership and VDS cover provided, plus two other subscriptions/memberships.
- We work closely with peripatetic specialists in ultrasonography (Veterinary Practice Support) and cardiology (Hannah Stevenson Cardiology), enabling us to work up the majority of cases in-house.
- We provide a supportive workplace, with several qualified GDP mentors, mental health first aiders, and well-being champions.
- We work closely with the University of Central Lancashire as a training practice, and we are a registered nurse training facility. We are invested in improving well-being at work. We have a team of wellbeing champions who meet regularly to arrange team events.
The Team
We have a lovely, well-established, friendly and supportive team.
It is very important to us that our team feel happy and supported at work. We have regular wellbeing meetings and are constantly looking at how we can improve and help our team feel appreciated and part of the team.
As a practice, we love to have social events. Over the last few years, we have taken part in the annual charity Pendle Pub Walk, covering 13 miles and visiting a few pubs for refreshments on the way! Many of our team enjoy taking part in activities, often raising money for various charities.
The Rota
Out of hours and On-Call Vets
- Full-time vets involved in the out-of-hours service do work a variation of 3, 4 and 5-day weeks throughout the 8-week rolling rota. If you are a full-time vet doing on-call, you will only have two 5-day weeks in every 8 weeks. However, many of our vets choose to have extra days off. We are very open to suggestions and happy to discuss what hours may suit you.
- Our loyal clients really appreciate our in-house out-of-hours service. We understand how this can impact on vets and do ensure on-call is kept to a minimum, and vets have the following 24 hours off after being on call.
- To further improve overnight care and provide major support to our vets, we have a team of RVN’s who work through the night. This makes being on call a lot less arduous for the on-call vet and greatly improves inpatient care.
- Providing in-house OOH care not only gives our clients a better service but also increases case exposure to our vets. Thus, allowing them to build experience and confidence in dealing with emergency and critical care patients.
Our weekend OOH rota is 1.5 in 8, with generous time off in lieu given:
- On-call Friday / Work Saturday morning only / Sunday on call (Monday & Tuesday off in lieu)
- On-call Saturday (With a Friday off in lieu), followed by 6 weekends off
In addition, you would be on-call approximately 1 night every other week with the following day off. The rota is on a continuous 8-week cycle, allowing you to plan your life ahead. We have an OOH telephone answering service, so you will not be taking calls directly.
Benefits
- Holidays are 6.6 weeks a year, including Bank Holidays (Pro Rata), with a holiday buy-back scheme, for those who love to travel
- You will have access to an Employee Assistance Programme
- You are also allowed to take 1 paid day volunteering leave, pro rata
- To support your work-life balance, we offer a corporate gym membership for £22.50/month and are part of the Cycle to Work scheme
- Enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental leave and surrogacy pay
- Private medical insurance available through group payroll deduction
- Team pets are like family, well-behaved pets should be able to come to work with you
