- Salary: £40,000–£65,000 per annum (dependent on experience and agreed role)
- Position Type: Full-time (4 or 5 days per week, depending on the chosen path)
The Opportunity
We are delighted to recruit for a highly regarded, independent, vet-owned, and RCVS-accredited small animal hospital based in South Wales. Led by an experienced clinical director team, including an Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery and an Advanced Practitioner in Feline Medicine, this hospital provides an exceptional, supportive clinical environment.
This is a flexible, senior-level position designed for an experienced Veterinary Surgeon who thrives on high-quality general practice, emergency care, clinical variety, and the rewarding task of mentoring less experienced veterinary surgeons.
The hospital runs its own dedicated out-of-hours (OOH) service, allowing for excellent continuity of inpatient care. With a registered veterinary nurse (RVN) and student veterinary nurse (SVN) on-site 24/7, you will always be fully supported.
Choose Your Path: Two Tailored Role Options
The practice is happy to shape this senior role in one of two ways, depending on your interests, clinical strengths, and the level of out-of-hours responsibility you prefer:
Option A: Senior Back-Up Role (4 Days per Week)
- The Rota: 4-day week consisting of 8-hour shifts.
- Weekends: 1 in 4 weekend mornings dedicated to inpatient care.
- OOH: 1 in 4 second on-call backup. Support is usually provided from home by phone, but you must live within a 30-minute travel time of the hospital for times when physical attendance is required.
Option B: First On-Call Role (5 Days per Week / 7 Nights on-call)
- The Rota: A structured 11-week rota which includes 7 nights on-call followed by 7 full days of recovery, plus 2 weekend mornings.
- OOH: Attending OOH emergencies and inpatient needs (with the senior backup vet available for complex cases or extra support). Due to the nature of first on-call, you must live within 15 minutes of the hospital or be comfortable staying in the comfortable, on-site practice flat during these shifts.
Day-to-Day Setup & Duties
- The Caseload: A varied mix of consulting, inpatient care, operating, and working alongside Cats Protection.
- The Routine: Enjoy a structured day-to-day setup designed to prevent burnout, featuring 1-hour lunch breaks, protected breaks, and dedicated, scheduled phone and admin time on consulting days.
- Your Influence: Ample opportunity to shape the role to build a bias toward your specific clinical strengths and interests, while maintaining a fair balance for the wider team.
- Mentorship: Take an active lead in clinical standards, supporting recent graduates and helping developing vets grow in confidence.
The Package
- Competitive salary of £40,000–£65,000 (dependent on your experience and whether you choose the backup or first on-call pathway).
- 33 days holiday (with the option to purchase up to an additional 5 days).
- Generous CPD allowance, with enhanced, structured support available if you are working towards or hold an Advanced Practitioner status.
- RCVS, VDS, and one additional professional membership fee paid.
