Emergency and critical care medicine. Day shifts. A not-for-profit mission. A brand new hospital opening January 2026.
If you love ECC, but not the lifestyle that usually comes with it.
If you are passionate about emergency and critical care, but tired of nights, relentless rotas, or feeling like you are constantly firefighting, this role may feel like a genuine breath of fresh air.
This is an opportunity to stay close to high-level ECC and inpatient medicine, while working structured day shifts in an environment designed to support both clinical excellence and human sustainability.
The Opportunity
We are working with a not-for-profit veterinary organisation opening a brand new, purpose-built A&E hospital in Teesside, in January 2026. Their focus is simple and refreshing. Deliver outstanding emergency and inpatient care, while looking after the people providing it.
This role sits at the heart of the hospital. As the A&E and inpatient veterinary surgeon, you will oversee inpatients and emergency admissions during the day, managing a varied and medically biased caseload. You will have the autonomy to perform emergency procedures yourself, while also working closely with a skilled nursing and vet team to coordinate complex cases.
There is also a small amount of GP work built into the rota. This is intentional, allowing you to maintain confidence with consults and elective surgery, while keeping the core of your role firmly rooted in ECC and inpatient medicine.
Why This Role Is Different
Day-Focused ECC Without Compromise
This is genuine emergency and inpatient work, but structured around 12-hour day shifts. No sole charge weekends, no overnight responsibility, and a rota designed to be sustainable long term.
Medically Interesting, Varied Caseload
You will see a broad mix of emergency presentations and inpatient cases, with time to work cases up properly rather than constantly passing them on.
Built on Not-for-Profit Values
Every decision is driven by patient care, team wellbeing, and long-term sustainability, not shareholder pressure or turnover targets.
Team-Based, Supportive Working
You will be surrounded by experienced clinicians and nurses, with a culture that values communication, trust, and shared responsibility, especially during high-pressure moments.
Your Journey Here
In Your First Month
You will focus on settling into the hospital systems, building relationships with the team, and becoming familiar with workflows, equipment, and inpatient protocols.
By Three Months
You will be confidently managing emergency admissions and inpatient care, communicating clearly with owners during difficult situations, and contributing actively to daily clinical decision-making.
By Six Months
You will be a core part of the hospital’s clinical rhythm, trusted with complex cases, shaping inpatient care standards, and exploring CPD aligned with your professional interests.
