Head of Veterinary Clinical Services
The Royal Stables, Equine Veterinary Clinic & Rehabilitation Centre
Abu Dhabi, UAE - Full-Time
About the Role
The Royal Stables is seeking an experienced equine veterinarian with a strong background in lameness, sports medicine and rehabilitation to lead the veterinary service, take primary responsibility for the day-to-day health and welfare of our resident horse population, and drive the development and ongoing management of our brand new Equine Veterinary Clinic & Rehabilitation Centre.
At its core, the role carries ongoing responsibility for the veterinary care and welfare of approximately 150 resident horses, ranging from high-performance liveries through to our riding school horses and ponies.
Our brand-new purpose built Equine Veterinary Clinic and Rehabilitation Centre is nearing completion, creating a unique opportunity to establish and lead a dedicated boutique clinic with a strong focus on lameness diagnostics and rehabilitation services with the longer-term objective of providing services to external horses and developing a referral caseload within the UAE.
The successful candidate will have a significant role in shaping the clinical protocols and day-to-day operation of the new veterinary clinic and rehabilitation centre from its opening.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the clinical opening and development of the Equine Veterinary Clinic & Rehabilitation Centre.
- Take primary, ongoing responsibility for the health and welfare of the 150 resident horses, overseeing preventive healthcare and herd health programmes including dentistry, vaccination and strategic deworming protocols, feeding and nutritional management, colic and emergency care.
- Maintain individual health records for the resident herd, monitoring long-term wellbeing and proactively adjusting care plans to support horses across all stages of their working and competition lives.
- Perform comprehensive lameness investigations, including gait assessment, diagnostic nerve and joint blocks, digital radiography, and ultrasonography.
- Develop individualised rehabilitation and return-to-work programmes for musculoskeletal and performance-related cases.
- Utilise the centre's advanced rehabilitation facilities, including aqua treadmill, cold-water spa, shockwave, Class 4 laser, PEMF and cryotherapy.
- Develop the centre's clinical protocols, standards and workflows.
- Work closely with owners, riders, trainers, management and stable staff.
- Support FEI compliance and preparedness for internationally competing dressage and para dressage horses, including travelling to international events.
- Establish professional relationships with external veterinarians, owners, trainers and riders as the referral service develops.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior veterinarians, veterinary technicians and stable staff.
The Equine Lameness & Rehabilitation Centre
The centre has been purpose-designed to provide a dedicated facility for the investigation, treatment and rehabilitation of lameness and performance-related conditions.
Facilities include:
- Digital radiography and ultrasonography
- Gastroscopy and on-site CBC/biochemistry
- FBMS aqua treadmill and cold-water spa
- Shockwave, Class 4 laser, PEMF and cryotherapy
- Salt and oxygen chamber
- Treatment rooms and holding boxes
- Fully equipped veterinary pharmacy
What We're Looking For
- DVM, BVSc or equivalent veterinary degree with eligibility for veterinary registration in the UAE.
- Minimum 5 years' equine veterinary experience, with substantial experience in lameness, sports medicine and rehabilitation.
- Postgraduate qualification or board certification in a relevant discipline is advantageous but not essential.
- Demonstrated experience in general equine practice and herd health management, with a genuine commitment to the day-to-day welfare of a large resident horse population.
- Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work independently and lead clinical development.
- Previous referral, competition or high-performance experience would be advantageous.
- Additional qualifications and treating experience in equine physiotherapy or manual therapy would be advantageous.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing individualised maintenance and rehabilitation programs using water treadmill and complementary therapeutic treatments would be highly advantageous.
