International wildlife charity Born Free has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the republication of its important 1987 book Beyond the Bars: The Zoo Dilemma.

Beyond the Bars is a collection of essays and contributions by the leading conservationists, writers, philosophers and campaigners of the time including Born Free Foundation Co-Founders Virginia McKenna OBE and Bill Travers MBE, comedian Spike Milligan, author Richard Adams, humanitarian Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan and philosopher Mary Midgley.

The new edition, to mark the book’s 30th anniversary and Born Free’s 2017 campaign Beyond the Bars, will include a new foreword and afterword, and a new chapter by Born Free’s Associate Director of Animal Welfare and Care, Chris Draper.

Born Free Foundation President, Will Travers OBE, who co-authored Beyond the Bars, said: “Three decades ago, Beyond the Bars raised many profound and important questions about our relationship with the natural world and the individual wild animals we share it with. It allows you to judge for yourself, with the passage of time, whether we have made progress, whether we have become a little more enlightened, and whether the challenges have changed or remained the same.”

The Kickstarter campaign is aiming to raise £10,000 by 27th October to fund the republication of Beyond the Bars, with a number of incentives on offer, including dinner with Virginia McKenna and Will Travers.

Will Travers added: “Sometimes it is only by looking back that we can truly look forward – which is why I hope you will support this Kickstarter campaign to allow for both the republication of Beyond the Bars, and for our campaign to make the world a better, kinder and more compassionate place.”

Born Free is running its Beyond the Bars campaign throughout 2017 to highlight the plight of captive wild animals worldwide. The campaign aims to expose suffering and neglect, recommend improvements to animal welfare and the enforcement of legislation, to increase public awareness, support the training of more vets inspectors, and close substandard zoos.
