BVA Responds To Closure Of University Of Cambridge Vet School’s Farm Unit

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has responded following the news that the University of Cambridge Farm Animal Veterinary Services will close next month.
The practice gave Cambridge Vet School students the chance to gain hands on farm animal experience as well as providing veterinary care for the animals of local farmers and keepers.
The news comes a few months after Cambridge University decided not to close its Vet School and to continue its undergraduate degree in veterinary medicine, following the Save the Vet School Campaign which saw BVA join forces with Cambridge students, alumni and university staff, the Association of Veterinary Students and local MPs.
Responding to news of the closure, BVA President Dr. Rob Williams FRCVS said: “We understand that the closure of Cambridge Vet School’s farm unit will be disappointing news for staff and students, but also for the local farming community who rely on its valuable veterinary provision. However, in light of its recent threat of closure, we recognise the challenges facing Cambridge Vet School to deliver a financially sustainable veterinary degree programme and the need for a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach, to ensure veterinary education at Cambridge continues. We look forward to seeing more detail about how the university will deliver its clinical farm rotations so that all its qualifying vets meet RCVS ‘day one competencies’.”
