Leading pharmaceutical company Krka will be celebrating 10 years of their highly palatable dog and cat worming solution, Milprazon at BVA Live on 12th-13th June. Milprazon CHEWABLE® remains the only wormer in its category with proven palatability for dogs, and so a party atmosphere will prevail on Krka’s stand #D25, featuring a delicious celebration with tasty treats and fun games.

When pet risk factors and lifestyle indicate regular worming is needed either quarterly or monthly, research has proved palatability is a critical element in tablet formulation to increase acceptance in dogs.

In 2015, when Krka started the journey to develop the Milprazon (milbemycin oxime/praziquantel) range, palatability to aid administration was a key goal. Now a well-established dog and cat-worming solution in the UK, Milprazon covers a wide range of indications including heartworm, lungworm, eyeworm and intestinal worms including tapeworm.

In 2022, Krka reached a milestone to upgrade the range to the highly palatable Milprazon CHEWABLE®, which offers proven palatability for dogs based on EMA Testing Guidelines that is referenced in the SmPC. In a study1, more than 85% of dogs ate the tablet ‘voluntarily’, with 75% taking it unprompted from their food bowl.

In general, more complex palatants that have appealing taste, smell, and mouth feel enhance voluntary uptake2 and research has shown that the mouth feel alone may not be enough to achieve palatability. For example, forms that are too chewy may not be freely consumed, even with complex palatants2.

Commenting on how the team developed the Milprazon CHEWABLE® range, Krka’s Technical Veterinary Adviser, Renzo Di Florio explained, “We used natural pig liver flavouring to provide a high level of palatability. This also has the advantage of associated reduction of allergy concerns compared to more common meat derivatives such as beef.3 We developed small tablet sizes that combine the best features of chewable and film-coated tablets to make them as easy as possible for pet owners to give.”

“In fact, for cats, small tablet size can be a real advantage4,” continues Renzo. “Tablets can be administered manually for more challenging cats without the need to break the tablet up. We are very proud that the cat formulation attained an Easy to Give award from International Cat Care, recognising that Milprazon helps to improve compliance and reduce stress for cats and their owners.”

Krka continues to innovate in the animal medicine category with new generic formulations, offering product advantages and an expanding range of therapeutic areas covered.
