New Milestone For Salmonella Protection As Vaccination Is Approved For Use In-lay
The UK’s first and only in-lay dual-strain Salmonella vaccine – AviPro™ Salmonella Duo – has been approved, providing extended bird immunity for up to 100 weeks[1]and supporting longer laying cycles.
This significant milestone in Salmonella control will further build on the success of the British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) and Lion Code’s efforts in protecting human health and consumer confidence in British eggs.
Dr Joshua Davison, veterinary technical consultant and brand manager at Elanco, says achieving approval for in-lay use required navigating complex regulatory requirements and marks a major development for the sector.
“Elanco’s long-term investment in research and development has helped deliver a solution to a challenge the industry has been facing for several years,” he says.
“Significant improvements in layer performance have extended production cycles towards 100 weeks of age; this innovation will now contribute to Salmonellaprotection for longer throughout the laying cycle, including the critical later stages of lay.”
Dr Davison says: “The current three-dose vaccination programme has been used for many years, providing protection for up to 68 weeks against Salmonella Enteritidisand 62 weeks against Salmonella Typhimurium.
“However, as laying cycles continue to extend, Salmonella risks can rise, and administering AviPro Salmonella Duo as a fourth dose at around 50 weeks of age addresses that gap, offering protection up to 100 weeks1 of age against S. Enteritidis and 94 weeks against S. Typhimurium1.”
The UK egg industry has worked hard to build its strong track record in controllingSalmonella, and Dr Davison says this new approval further strengthens the industry’s control measures, providing the long-term protection egg packers, producers and vets are looking for.
The in-lay dose is delivered via an easily administered in-water vaccination with zero-day egg, meat and offal1 withdrawal after the fourth dose, meaning producers will not experience any loss of production.
“Salmonella remains a significant human health issue, and we must do everything we can to maintain food safety and trust in British eggs,” adds Dr Davison.
“We are proud of Elanco’s role in delivering this solution, and we will continue to invest in research and innovation to respond to the evolving needs of the poultry industry.”
