An award-winning animal hospital in Wakefield has appointed a new veterinary ophthalmologist who is keen to use his role to improve pets’ quality of life.

Matthew Dobson joins Linnaeus-owned Paragon Veterinary Referrals and will be diagnosing and treating eye diseases and disorders in animals.

Matthew, who also conducts research related to animal vision and eye health, said: “Paragon has an enviable ophthalmology department and I’m excited to work alongside the rest of the team, and help as many patients as possible.”

After graduating from the Royal Veterinary College in 2016, Matthew spent three years working in a mixed practice in North Yorkshire, before moving to a referral clinic in Bristol to pursue his interest in ophthalmology.

He completed an ophthalmology internship in 2019 and a BSAVA ophthalmology certificate in 2022, becoming an RCVS advanced practitioner in veterinary ophthalmology in 2023.

His ambition in his new role is to advance his expertise, while also undertaking research projects that he hopes will benefit animals beyond Paragon.

Away from work, Matthew has an interest in software development and has created and maintained a veterinary revision app which is used by more than 10,000 vets and students around the world.

He is also the web co-ordinator for the British Association of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (BrAVO), plus works on multiple projects with the European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians (EAZWV).

Matthew added: “Once settled in Yorkshire again, I hope to rescue a Cocker Spaniel to explore the countryside with.”

Paragon provides expert care in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
