World Horse Welfare is launching a third series of Horses Explained, offering practical, expert-led guidance on giving horses a good life at every stage.
Returning on Friday 4 September, the seven-part series brings together leading vets, welfare scientists and equine specialists to explore the decisions that shape a horse’s life. Expert speakers will discuss whether to breed, foaling, weaning and young horse care, right through to horses in work and caring for veteran horses.
Free to watch and designed to be both practical and accessible, with each episode around 20 minutes long, Horses Explained gives owners, riders and carers the confidence to make informed, welfare-focused choices. The new series is particularly timely as the future of horse sport continues to be shaped by public expectations around welfare, transparency and responsible management.
Rebecca Boulert, Education Officer at World Horse Welfare, says: “As our understanding of horse welfare grows, it’s important that our care evolves too so that we can provide horses with the best lives possible, at all ages. This series brings respected experts from across the sector together to share the latest thinking on horse welfare and help owners make informed decisions at every stage of a horse’s life.”
Speakers include equine reproduction specialist James Crabtree, animal welfare scientist Aline Bouquet, vet and behaviourist Gemma Pearson, veterinary behaviourist Ellie Girgis and veterinary surgeon Nicky Housby Skeggs.
The series also reflects World Horse Welfare’s vision for the responsible involvement of horses in sport, an evidence-informed guide which outlines the principles to follow to ensure a horse's physical and mental wellbeing are prioritised throughout their life.
Rebecca adds: “The latest series of Horses Explained explores what it really means to give a horse a good life from birth to death. That is central to our vision for responsible horse sport, because good welfare cannot begin at a competition venue – it has to run through every stage of a horse’s life, from breeding and early handling to training, work, retirement and end-of-life decisions.”
New episodes will be released every Friday from 4 September until 16 October and can be viewed free of charge at worldhorsewelfare.org/advice/horses-explained.
