This practical workshop is designed to build your confidence in the investigation and surgical management of neurological and spinal conditions. Through focused theory and guided wet-lab sessions, you will develop practical skills in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collection, myelography, electrodiagnostic testing, muscle and nerve biopsy, and commonly performed spinal surgical procedures.
You will learn how to position patients correctly, perform key diagnostic techniques and interpret results, including recognising artefacts and incorrect electrode placement. Under the guidance of an experienced veterinary neurologist, you will also practise spinal approaches including ventral slot, cervical and thoracolumbar fenestration, hemilaminectomy, lumbosacral dorsal laminectomy and partial discectomy.
By the end of the course, you should feel more confident performing neurological diagnostic procedures, interpreting your findings and undertaking a range of commonly indicated spinal surgical techniques.
Topics to be covered include:
Cisternal and lumbar CSF collection and analysis
Cisternal and lumbar myelography
Electromyography and nerve conduction studies
Repetitive nerve stimulation and BAEP testing
Muscle and nerve biopsy techniques and sample handling
Ventral slot and cervical fenestration
Thoracolumbar hemilaminectomy and fenestration
Lumbosacral dorsal laminectomy, discectomy and other spinal surgical approaches
