This 100% online CPD mini-module has been developed and aimed towards the more experienced veterinary surgeon. The module content has been developed by veterinary specialists at the forefront of current veterinary research.The module will provide you with 25 hours of designation specific CPD. Over four weeks we will cover a different weekly topic in an area in which there may have been changes, advances or controversy in recent years.The course is taught and tutored by Liverpool and other external veterinary specialists, following a similar format to the University of Liverpools CertAVP modules. With online lectures, discussion boards and weekly MCQ tests designed to help support your learning, this short Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care mini-module will provide a fun and interactive way to ensure you keep up to date in your area of interest. Course content: Week 1: 7 March 2022Updates in the use of clinical pathology in the ECC settingSpeaker - Ludivine BoironLudivine Boiron present four lectures allowing practitioners to make the most of clinical pathology in the ECC setting. The learning material will ensure delegates are able to optimise their in-house blood smears, cavitary fluid analysis, urinalysis and point-of-care emergency bloodwork, allowing efficient and high-quality patient management. Week 2: 14 March 2022Updates in small animal ECC surgery - top tips and myth bustingSpeakers - Rachel Burrow and Smita DasThis week Smita Das and Rachel Burrow will present tips for ECC practitioners to improve their soft tissue surgery skills. To begin, Smita will cover the topics of wound management and gastrointestinal surgery in ECC. Rachel Burrow will then discuss surgical controversies in ECC (for example whether or not to cysto a cat/dog with a ruptured urethra, use of transcutaneous cystostomy tube for temporary urine diversion, placement of chest drains versus thoracotomy in pyothorax) along with crucial myth-busting practical tips to aid decision-making when the best option is unclear. Week 3 - Break week Week 4: 28 March 2022Updates in the emergency management of the exotic patient - all your exotics bases coveredSpeakers - Vicki Baldrey and Jack McHaleWe are delighted to introduce two of the UKs most dedicated exotic pet vets, Vicki Baldrey and Jack MacHale, who will present user-friendly strategies for management of the ever-challenging exotic pet emergency. Using four lectures to cover species-specific considerations for birds, reptiles, rabbits and small mammals, this week provides essential material for vets in general practice and ECC alike. Week 5: 04 April 2022Updates in anaesthesia and analgesia of the emergency patientSpeakers - Natalie Bruniges and Briony AldersonBy popular demand, our final week covers anaesthetic and analgesic considerations in the ECC patient. Liverpools own Briony Alderson and Natalie Bruniges will present lectures on; anaesthesia and analgesia of the traumatic brain injury/spinal injury patient, linking fluid therapy and management of hypotension with outcome in ECC patients, the use of lactate as a prognostic indicator and the use of colloids in the emergency patient.
