PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION
Errors occur in every veterinary practice almost every day - and everyone has made at least one mistake at some point. Most of us have made more than one. Some are minor and have no overall impact on the health of the patient, but some have serious consequences. Regardless, they all have repercussions, whether it is how it impacts the individual making the error or the pet that experiences the error. Then there is the dilemma – and sometimes anguish - of how to explain it to a client or a colleague or hospital management.
This panel of colleagues and friends has decades of experience approaching this problem from the perspective of medical director, doctor, nurse, and hospital manager, across 2 continents. This discussion hopes to provide insight into how to address these errors with minimal stress to all involved, and how to establish some hospital guidelines for both preventing errors as well as how to create a safe environment for reporting them. Questions and comments from the audience on this often-overlooked topic are very much welcomed.
