The Role

Hamilton Specialist Referrals are proud to announce that we are now inviting applications for Small Animal Rotating Interns.

This role is the perfect opportunity to work collaboratively with clinicians across multiple disciplines and expand your skills, knowledge and experience. We offer a specialist-led internship programme for the duration of 13 months. The role consists of varying shifts to suit the needs of a 24/7/365 hospital, which includes care of in-house patients during out-of-hours. Active involvement in client communication and patient care is expected, with participation in consults and treatments/surgeries. Our internship offers weekly journal clubs and radiography rounds.

You will work 40 hours per week on average. The weekly rotations include Internal Medicine (plus Oncology), Out of Hours, Surgery (Soft Tissue and Orthopaedics), Neurology and Anaesthesia, with time off to perform externships in other referral institutes. Teaching is an essential component of the internship, with weekly scheduled didactic seminars and lectures, plus M+M rounds are intern-led, to augment the clinical experience.

Start date for the role: 03/07/2023

Application deadline: 17/02/2023.

About Us

Hamilton Specialist Referrals is a purpose-built, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital that provides the latest in cutting-edge, specialist treatments for cats and dogs, supported by an exceptional rehabilitation and physiotherapy facility. We deliver world-class, exemplary clinical services, with a clear focus on the people that make that a reality.

About the Team and Culture

Hamilton Specialist Referrals was born of the belief that there is room for a new wave of veterinary excellence across the UK. Excellent clinical care, that is second-to-none, delivered in a friendly and supportive manner to referring vets and clients, is paramount to the team.

A happy team is a great team and at Hamilton Specialist Referrals we strongly believe that by nurturing our workforce we will enable our staff to fulfil their potential, honouring our commitment to providing an incomparable service to our patients, clients and referring vets.

We are very proud of our entire team and employ a wide range of workplace measures to ensure our staff are happy. From the highest standards of air quality and a proactive CPD programme, fruit and milk deliveries and private health insurance, we want our staff to feel valued and be happy at work.

We have an in-house performance and resilience coach, Mental Health First Aiders and access to external Wellbeing Consultants. Our focus on wellbeing, team building and resilience allow our team to thrive in practice. We host regular team training sessions and all of our staff have undertaken the DISC character profiling to improve self-awareness and improve communication between colleagues; as well as being lots of fun, the results are already clear to see.

Applicant Requirements

Candidates wishing to apply must be MRCVS and eligible to work in the UK (Visa sponsorship offered), and it would also be desirable that applicants provide evidence of competency in speaking English, as determined by a formal qualification in English (such as IELTS or TOEFL). Candidates need to be proactive, enthusiastic and a great team player, but also be able to use their own initiative and self-motivate. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to multi-task with a flexible approach to working are a must.

Interns will work with their supervising clinician to participate effectively in all aspects of planning, diagnosis and treatment of cases. Animal welfare and the ethics of interventions must be considered by balancing practical and financial factors when determining appropriate patient care. Therefore, the ability to apply prior knowledge and experience to maintain the high clinical standards expected within our hospitals is essential.

Interns will openly engage in case discussions with the senior supervising clinicians, residents and senior nursing team and should contribute to a positive, informative, respectful and inclusive environment for all. Attention to detail, particularly with maintaining accurate records and written correspondence is also a key component of this role.
