Head Veterinary Nurse – Fixed Term Contract (15 months)
Full Time | Small Animal Hospital – South Wales
We’re seeking an experienced and driven Head Veterinary Nurse to lead our nursing team on a 15-month fixed term contract, covering maternity leave. This is a fantastic opportunity for a confident RVN with strong leadership skills to play a central role in the clinical and operational running of a busy, well-equipped hospital.
The Role
This is a hands-on leadership position, ideal for an RVN who enjoys balancing clinical work with team management. You’ll work closely with the vets and practice management team, helping to maintain high clinical standards while fostering a positive, supportive workplace culture. You’ll be based primarily at the main hospital site in Bridgend, working alongside another Head Nurse and two Deputy Nurses.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead, mentor and support the nursing team
• Oversee day-to-day nursing operations and clinical standards
• Remain actively involved in clinical nursing duties
• Support nurse training and student development
• Ensure compliance with RCVS standards and PSS requirements
• Rota management and team coordination
• Conduct performance reviews, probation reviews and 1:1s
• Support stock control, equipment maintenance and clinical audits
• Promote a collaborative, positive and supportive team environment
About the Practice
This is a multi-site small animal practice with a central hospital in Bridgend and several branches across South Wales. The hospital holds RCVS Hospital Status and Gold ISFM Cat Friendly accreditation. The team includes multiple certificate holders, and RVNs are encouraged to utilise their full skillset across a wide and varied medical and surgical caseload. The practice is purpose-built, well-equipped, and places genuine emphasis on clinical standards, teamwork and wellbeing—without commercial targets.
