Mixed Veterinary Surgeon – Farm & Small Animal
North Cumbria / Lake District

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mixed Veterinary Surgeon to join a long-established, independent practice with deep roots in the local farming community. Based in a market town on the edge of the Lake District, this role offers an excellent balance of progressive farm work, supportive small animal exposure and genuine long-term career prospects.

The Role
This is a predominantly farm animal position (approx. 90%), with a small animal element (around 10%), mainly linked to out-of-hours cover, weekends or holiday support. There is flexibility to increase small animal involvement for candidates keen to help develop this side of the practice as mixed practice continues to evolve.

You’ll be encouraged to pursue your clinical interests, whether that’s herd health, preventive medicine, internal medicine or surgery, with full support for postgraduate qualifications and professional development.

The Practice

Independent practice established for nearly 120 years

Progressive farm clients within a compact catchment area (most within a 10-mile radius)

Strong focus on herd and flock preventive health

Well-equipped with ultrasound, digital X-ray and bull breeding soundness equipment

Supportive team including multiple vets, nursing support, dedicated reception and experienced leadership

True clinical freedom with encouragement to shape your own role

Rota & Work–Life Balance

4-day working week

One long weekend off in five (Friday–Monday inclusive)

2-in-5 out-of-hours rota (with plans to move to 1-in-5)

Always two vets on call for support

On-call generally quiet outside of seasonal peaks

What’s on Offer

Competitive salary, dependent on experience

Fully funded CPD allowance

Company car provided (private mileage reimbursed)

Generous holiday allowance

Company pension scheme

Staff discount

Clear scope for career progression and future partnership for the right individual

The Ideal Candidate

Interest and enthusiasm for mixed or farm-focused veterinary practice

Strong communication skills and a proactive, forward-thinking mindset

Keen to develop professionally and contribute to the long-term future of the business

Open to taking ownership and helping shape the next chapter of the practice

This is a rare opportunity to join a genuinely independent practice offering clinical freedom, excellent support and long-term prospects in one of the UK’s most desirable rural locations.
