Purpose-led ECC medicine | Genuine social impact

If You Care Deeply About ECC, But Want It to Mean Something

If you love emergency and critical care but feel increasingly uncomfortable with profit-led decisions, rushed conversations, or pets going untreated, this role may feel like a breath of fresh air.

This is night work with purpose, support, and clinical integrity at its core.

The Opportunity

We are working with a not-for-profit veterinary organisation in Barnsley, that is transforming its clinic into a true 24/7 hospital. This is not about filling night shifts. It is about building a sustainable, compassionate A&E service, that delivers outstanding care when pets and owners need it most.

You will join the dedicated night team as an experienced veterinary surgeon, working alongside a qualified registered veterinary nurse. Your focus will be managing a varied caseload of medical and surgical ECC cases, while overseeing inpatients overnight with continuity and care.

Although you will be based on site overnight, you are never clinically isolated. The wider organisation operates a 24-hour service across multiple hospitals, meaning experienced colleagues are always available for discussion, advice, and second opinions. Collaboration is built into the model.

Why This Role Is Different

ECC with real clinical depth

This is not triage-only emergency work. You will see genuine medical and surgical ECC cases, manage inpatients through the night, and provide continuity that allows you to practise high-quality medicine rather than firefighting.

A rota that respects recovery

The 7 nights on, 14 nights off rota averages 31.1 hours per week, giving you genuine downtime between blocks and the chance to fully recover, reset, and enjoy life outside of work.

Your Journey Here

In your first month, you will focus on settling into the hospital, understanding workflows, and building strong working relationships with the nursing team and wider night network.

By three months, you will be confidently managing the overnight caseload, taking ownership of ECC decision-making, and contributing to the inpatient care plans with autonomy and support.

By six months, you will be an established and trusted night vet, with the opportunity to pursue further ECC development, including funded CPD or certificates if desired, and play a role in shaping the future of the 24/7 service.
