Barnsley Veterinary Hospital Celebrates 21st Birthday

A veterinary hospital in Barnsley is celebrating the milestone of 21 successful years of caring for pets from across South Yorkshire.
Vets4Pets Barnsley Hospital, on Wilthorpe Road, is reflecting on more than two decades of providing expert treatment to clients after the practice was established in 2002 by two members of staff who still run the hospital today.
Husband and wife Dr Caroline Richards and Dr Peter Richards are both qualified veterinary surgeons who founded the practice as a team of two. Since then, they have continued to invest in their team and today employ 75 colleagues.
The practice itself has also expanded over the years, following a series of renovations that have enabled the team to care for more clients and deliver a wider range of services.
This included the opening of expanded cat and dog wards, and development of bigger theatre spaces in 2010, as well as the addition of a hydrotherapy suite to support the rehabilitation of their patients.
Additionally, in 2020, the practice expanded further to take additional referrals and install a CT scanner.
In 2019, the practice was the first Vets4Pets in the UK to be granted hospital status by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Since then, the hospital has provided 24-hour, on-site, out-of-hours emergency care, using the latest technology and equipment to perform advanced surgical procedures including keyhole surgery and diagnostics.
Over the years, Vets4Pets Barnsley Hospital has been recognised for its outstanding work, receiving several awards including a Pets at Home Clinical Excellence Award in 2018.
Some of its most memorable cases include performing spinal surgery on a four-year-old crossbreed dog named Tink to correct a herniated disk in 2022, using laser treatment and hydrotherapy to help her recovery.
Dr Caroline Richards, Practice Owner and Veterinary Surgeon at Vets4Pets Barnsley Hospital, said: “It’s a fantastic feeling for the practice to be ‘coming of age’ and celebrating 21 years. When we first opened our doors, we were a team of two with no clients and just really hoped that people would come through the door.
“Now, we’ve built the practice into an award-winning veterinary hospital with the help of our incredible team. The standard and passion of each individual amazes me every day, and I feel so proud of all that we accomplished and what else we have to come.”
To mark the occasion, the practice hosted a birthday party for clients and their pets, complete with pupcakes and goody bags.
