Burgess Pet Care is celebrating the success of its recent Greyhound & Lurcher Two-week Takeover campaign, which saw it donate over £8,000 worth of Burgess Supadog Greyhound and Lurcher food to six greyhound and lurcher rescue centres across the UK.

Burgess’ latest digital campaign reached thousands of people and included a two-week takeover of its social media channels to share information about greyhounds and lurchers and what makes them wonderful pets. The campaign also shone a light on some of the fantastic work being carried out by UK greyhound and lurcher rescue centres, including some of the animals in need of homes.

During the campaign, Burgess asked its customers and followers to nominate independent greyhound and lurcher rescue centres they would like to receive a share of the substantial food donation. The six rescues that received the most nominations were:

  1. Greyhound Gap - Stoke-on-Trent
  2. Sheffield Retired Greyhounds – Sheffield, South Yorkshire
  3. Cheshire Sighthound Rescue - Cheshire
  4. Forever Hounds Trust – Cullompton, Devon
  5. Evesham Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue – Evesham, Worcestershire
  6. Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders – Hainford, Norwich

Charlotte Varley, Communications Manager at Burgess Pet Care, said: -

“The pressure on rescue centres has never been greater as the cost of living crisis has resulted in even more greyhounds and lurchers needing homes. There are so many wonderful centres and volunteers who never give up on them and work year-round to rehome and support the health and happiness of these wonderful creatures.

“It has been fantastic to receive such an incredible response to this year’s Greyhound and Lurcher campaign and we are so grateful to everyone who took the time to nominate the rescue centres close to their hearts. We were also thrilled to learn that Lexi, who was in the care of Dumfriesshire & Cumbria Greyhound Rescue, found her forever home during the Two Week Takeover campaign!

“For many years, Burgess has donated 20 pence from every purchased pack of Supadog Greyhound & Lurcher, which goes straight back into food donations for rescue centres and we are delighted to continue this initiative throughout this year and beyond.”

Jazmin Derbyshire, Fundraising Manager at Forever Hounds Trust, said: -

“We are incredibly grateful to Burgess Pet Care and to everyone who voted for Forever Hounds Trust. The rescue greyhounds and lurchers in our care require large quantities of food and this donation will mean we have lots of happy full tummies! We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who continues to support us.”

Naomi Temperley, Founder Trustee of Cheshire Sighthound Rescue added: -

"We are absolutely honoured to be one of six winners for Burgess Pet Care’s Greyhound and Lurcher Two Week Takeover campaign. We want to thank everyone who voted for us and, of course, Burgess themselves. Cheshire Sighthound Rescue is run by just three of us in our own spare time outside of our normal full time jobs. Every little bit of help we receive is so appreciated and means we can carry on doing the work we do. On behalf of ourselves and all the dogs, thank you."

Burgess Pet Care’s Greyhound & Lurcher takeover campaign will return for a fifth year in 2024.
