Half of group’s sites will be upgraded within the next five years

CVS has pledged to spend up to £50m a year to upgrade and relocate current practices and to open new practices to a new minimum practice facility standard.

Over half of its existing small animal sites will either be refurbished or relocated to this standard over the next three to five years.

The new CVS standard has been designed by its veterinary surgeons, nurses, practice managers, receptionists and patient care assistants. Colleagues in practices across the group came together to outline what a good practice looked like. From this, a new minimum practice facility standard was developed.

The new standard has been designed around colleagues and the way they work. It includes well laid out clinical spaces, including; multiple consultation rooms, spacious operating theatres, central preparation areas, specialist dental suites, in-house laboratories and digital x-ray facilities. In addition isolation wards, separate dog and cat hospital wards and new walk-in kennels are incorporated for larger dog breeds.

Creating a nice place to work was also instrumental to the standard. So the new practice design includes modern office spaces, ample kitchen and food preparation facilities, proper rest areas where colleagues can take a break, and staff showers and lockers.

In addition, the practice standard is designed to make clients and their pets feel comfortable. New and relocated sites have been selected with ample parking and which are accessible to all. Building layouts incorporate large and welcoming reception areas with separate waiting areas for cats and dogs to keep stress to a minimum, along with easy access to consultation rooms for clients and patients.

Ben Jacklin, Chief Operating Officer at CVS, said: “Our ambition is to provide the best possible care for animals and our vision is to be the veterinary company people most want to work for. We recognise to deliver that we need to have great facilities wherever we are operating. With every refurbishment and relocation, we are committed to upgrading our facilities to a practice facilities standard. And we’re committing to spend up to £50m a year within the next five years to achieve that. This equates to us improving around half of our existing practice sites.”

The new practice facility standard has so far been introduced at eight CVS sites; Springfield Vets (Hackenthorpe), Ashfield Vets (Stanley), Carrick Vets (Chesterfield), Southport Vets (Southport), Harbour Vets (Havant), Ruddington Vets (Nottingham), West Mount Vets (Huddersfield), and Alnorthumbria Vets (Ponteland). Half of CVS’ current practices will be refurbished or relocated to this standard over the next three to five years. In addition, the new standard will be introduced at all new practices in areas where increased veterinary provision is needed.

CVS Group operates across small animal, farm animal, equine, laboratories and crematoria, with over 500 veterinary practices, referral centres and sites in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands. In the last five years the company has invested nearly £80 million in its sites, facilities and equipment, in addition to industry leading training and support, to give the best possible care to animals.
