CVS Group will launch the VetSkill Level 5 Advanced Certificate in Veterinary Nursing (Practice Nurse) this February[1].

It is only the second such course to be offered to practice nurses in the UK. Any registered veterinary nurse in the UK is eligible to apply.

The new Level 5 qualification is designed for Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) wishing to advance their knowledge and skills in practice nursing to a mastery level, beyond that of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Day One Skills and Competences. It is applicable to nurses working within the practice consulting room or district nurse environments.

The modules for the advanced certificate course will cover professional practice and legislation, consulting skills, nutrition and diet, medical clinics, prescribing and dispensing for the practice nurse, coaching, mentoring and support, plus practical practice nurse skills.

It will enable veterinary nurses to provide gold standards clinical care and exceptional customer service to both patients and clients within relevant and current clinical guidelines.

Available throughout the UK, CVS’ Level 5 Advanced Certificate in Veterinary Nursing (Practice Nurse) will be taught online, with face-to-face induction and assessments. The course will last 12-18 months, with enrolment through the Chester Veterinary Training Centre and facilitated by experienced tutors within the CVS Learning Education and Development team.

Jacqueline Evans, Head of CVS Group’s Chester Veterinary Training Centre, said:

“Our veterinary nurses are hugely important to us. A good nurse, offering great care, is fundamental to a good practice. So we wanted to increase the breadth of veterinary nurse training – both for CVS and external nurses – to give them the opportunity to progress their careers and be the very best they can be.

“Offering this course is a very big step for us. The Centre and the CVS learning and development team have dedicated a lot of time to develop the course. And we are expecting a lot of interest in this new qualification.”

Established in 2009, CVS’ Chester Veterinary Training Centre is an approved training provider with the ESFA, RCVS and VetSkill. It specialises in training Student Nurses (SVNs) and Patient Care Assistants, and offers apprenticeships in level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing and the level 2 Certificate in Veterinary Care Support, along with Level 5 Advanced Veterinary Nursing[2] (Practice Nurse) and OSCE Practical Revision Days. These courses are in addition to the extensive internal nursing CPD which is offered to all CVS nurses. Led by Karen Learmonth, this internal training covers a wide range of clinical and non-clinical topics and practical courses like Schedule 3, CPR and a new ultrasound course coming soon.

The Centre has been categorised Good by OFSTED, following a full inspection conducted in November 2022. Whilst in December 2022, the centre exceedednational average ‘first time pass rates’ in almost all veterinary nursing modules, according to VetSkill data. The facility has also recently been ranked Excellent by its employers as an apprentice provider on the government apprentice service.

CVS Group’s VetSkill Level 5 Advanced Certificate in Veterinary Nursing (Practice Nurse) will be open to students in February. To apply veterinary nurses should visit www.chestervtc.co.uk to complete an application form or email the Centre [email protected] .
