A new cohort of holders of the Level 5 Certificate in Veterinary Leadership and Management (CVLM) has been announced by the Veterinary Management Group (VMG) – the first for 2023 - bringing the number of holders of the first qualification stage – the Award (AVLM) – to more than 100, with 16 having achieved the second stage Certificate (CVLM).

In addition to the core modules of the course studied by all participants, learners in this latest cohort were the first to select an additional topic specifically tailored to the needs of their current role – or the role they aspire to. Specialisation options include practice finance, HR, mental health and leading change.

The VMG Award, Certificate and Diploma are modular qualifications with an emphasis on flexibility, accessibility, and real-world relevance.  The qualification is accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM).

West Yorkshire-based Gatehouse Vets has supported five team members with differing roles in studying for the AVLM. Practice Manager Louise Marshall RVN explains: “One of the reasons why I chose the AVLM/CVLM for my team members is that it is designed by people who understand management of a veterinary practice and all of the mentors have worked in practice, which means the practical knowledge they have is very extensive.”

Dr Hannah Perrin, VMG/ILM Qualifications Course Director, added: “As leadership roles within the veterinary sector – and the careers of those taking them up - become ever more diverse, our priority in developing the CVLM was to create a qualification which was practical and engaging. It also had to be flexible enough to accommodate a range of career interests and aspirations, while retaining a core focus on leadership skills.

“Providing effective leadership in today’s fast-moving veterinary world is no mean feat but the response to the CVLM shows that many current and future veterinary leaders are determined to take the steps necessary to ensure they can motivate and inspire their teams successfully through the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

The VMG is the professional association for all those in leadership and management roles in the veterinary sector.  It empowers and equips veterinary leaders and their organisations to learn, share, and grow. The ILM is a professional membership body for leaders and managers and is the UK’s leading provider of leadership qualifications.  Its purpose is improving leadership development, both in the UK and worldwide, ensuring businesses and individuals are equipped for the working world now and in the future.

Awardees will receive their awards during VMG Congress, which takes place on 8-9 June 2023 at the Crowne Plaza, Stratford upon Avon. For full details of the programme and ticket pricing, visit: https://vmgevents.co.uk/
