Global animal charity SPANA (the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad) is highlighting the importance and role of its mobile veterinary clinics across the world, with its spring appeal.

SPANA’s mobile clinics deliver lifesaving veterinary treatment and care to working animals in need within isolated and rural communities. Reaching some of the most inaccessible and remote locations in the world, SPANA’s mobile clinics and their travelling vet teams are at the frontline in the daily battle to ease suffering, and improve working animal welfare.

SPANA currently runs 39 mobile clinics, which extend the charity’s reach beyond its global network of veterinary centres. These mobile clinics operate in multiple sites across 15 low-income countries. Without SPANA’s mobile clinics and their early intervention, thousands of working animals are at risk of dying or living in terrible pain for the rest of their lives.

SPANA’s mobile clinics are a lifeline for working animals that would otherwise have no access to crucial veterinary care and would be left untreated and forgotten. In addition to providing veterinary treatment, the mobile clinic teams offer animal welfare advice to owners, run community training sessions and provide training opportunities for veterinary students so they can learn to treat working animals.

SPANA’s spring appeal is aiming to raise funds for the critical work of its mobile clinics. The appeal launched on 20 March and will encompass supporter mailings and digital promotion during the next two months.

SPANA Veterinary Advisor, Dr Anna Bowker BVSc MRCVS CertAVP (ESM), said: “Mobile clinics are essential to SPANA’s ongoing work to transform the welfare of working animals. In remote areas where there is no access to animal welfare care and support, SPANA’s mobile clinics allow us to help sick and injured animals in the heart of isolated communities, where working animals are relied on for survival.

“Each of our mobile clinics travel hundreds of miles every week to reach thousands of working animals who would otherwise be forgotten. For many of these working animals, SPANA is their only hope.”

David Bassom, Director of Global Fundraising, Marketing and Communications at SPANA said: “SPANA’s spring appeal will help us to continue running our mobiles clinics, at a time when the need for our work is greater than ever. As SPANA is funded entirely by voluntary donations, we depend on the kindness of our donors and funders to ensure our mobile clinics can reach more working animals in desperate need, wherever they may be.”

SPANA is the world’s longest-running charity dedicated to supporting global working animal welfare. In 2022, the charity provided vital veterinary treatment, care and support to 306,412 working animals. It also taught animal welfare lessons to 87,241 children and provided training in animal care to 89,924 working animal owners.
