Grads to Vets is expanding its successful graduate scheme this year with a new equine programme. Commencing in October, the year-long programme is designed to provide graduate or recently graduated vets with structured support as they navigate their first year in practice, through tailored hands-on CPD, online case discussions and mentoring.

The scheme has been developed in partnership with XLVets to support independent practices that may not have the time and resources to deliver a comprehensive graduate specific CPD package. The programme extends support to the practice team by building a network for VetGDP Advisers, giving them a space to discuss and develop their mentoring techniques.

The equine programme carefully considers specific elements of life in equine practice. Modules covered include driver skills, practical equine pharmacology, finance and business. Clinical modules focus on how to approach equine emergencies and wound care, along with dentistry, foot care and pathology. Along with educational CPD, graduates attend social gatherings to help build peer relationships, a vital element in equine practice.

Charlotte Moody, vet and member of the Grads to Vets team, explains “Success in equine practice comes as much from managing yourself, your expectations and wellbeing, along with developing relationships with clients, as it does from your hard-earned skills. The equine programme helps graduates navigate difficult conversations, improve driver awareness and understand the financial elements of practice - skills that will help them thrive.”

Grads to Vets enters its fifth year of supporting small animal new graduates and continues to adapt to ensure that the needs of the graduates and practices are met. A survey of the 2020 cohort revealed that 96% of respondents would like regular structured mentoring. As such, all new grads are now given a personal mentor, some of whom are recent Grads to Vet graduates and are perfectly placed to compliment the VetGDP advisor.

Charlotte, explains how the scheme is advantageous to practices that take on new graduates “The ultimate goal of looking after our new graduates is to help the whole team and Grads To Vets is no different.  In addition to being an excellent aid in recruiting, the programme offers multi-level support from that exciting first step to the realities of a vets first year in practice.  Knowing that the new graduate will receive practical teaching, peer discussions and mentorship provides significant peace of mind for all involved. We are aware that the VetGDP advisers experience their own learning curve, so they also gain access to relevant training and support within their own dedicated community.”

Independent practices have been sent an informative letter in the post regarding this year’s Grads to Vets Scheme and the addition of the equine syllabus. As well as welcoming new graduates onto this year’s programme, which starts in October, the Grads to Vets team help to represent independent practices looking for new graduates to fill their vacancies. Representatives attend all the vet school careers days and practices can be added to the Grads to Vets database by emailing Charlotte at [email protected].
