Jurox (UK) Ltd, manufacturer of Alfaxan for dogs, cats and pet rabbits, has further demonstrated its investment in educational initiatives for veterinary professionals by launching an informative booklet covering expert guidelines for rabbit anaesthesia.

The ‘Considerations for Anaesthetising Rabbits’ expert panel guidelines booklet has been produced following the inaugural rabbit anaesthesia roundtable meeting in June 2017, which featured a panel of leading experts discussing best practice rabbit anaesthesia.  Topics focused on the challenges faced by vets and nurses when presented with a pet rabbit patient.  The experts included:

The booklet contains practical advice on handling rabbits, anaesthetic drugs, procedures and what to look out for from the moment the rabbit arrives into the practice up to recovery and homecare; there is special attention to the considerations veterinary professionals must take in practice in order to reduce anxiety of the rabbit patient as much as possible at every stage.

Topics covered in the booklet include: medications in rabbits generally used according to the UK prescribing cascade; preparing for rabbit anaesthesia in clinic; staff training; an overview of anaesthetic drugs; induction process and important points of difference; monitoring and recovery and adjunctive treatments.

Richard Beckwith, country manager of Jurox (UK) Ltd, comments: “Rabbits are prey species and often become stressed in the veterinary practice environment which can have a negative impact during anaesthesia and post-anaesthesia.  Our new ‘Considerations for Anaesthetising Rabbits’ expert panel guidelines booklet will help address this and raise anaesthesia and analgesia standards in veterinary practices.

The booklet is just one of Jurox’s educational initiatives that help veterinary practices deliver the most up-to-date and comprehensive anaesthesia for their patients. The company also hosts CPD meetings, in-clinic discussions on practice protocols relating to pre-meds and analgesia and lunch and learn meetings.
