As part of its drive to operate more sustainably, Medivet  is introducing eco-friendly carrier bags at its practices across the UK. The bags are made from organic polymer, created from sugar cane, which means that they are fully recyclable and carbon-neutral because they capture CO2 from the atmosphere, while also releasing oxygen. They have been supplied by Pioneer Veterinary Products in an initiative supported by animal health company, Animalcare.

Dr Josh Langlois, Branch Partner at Medivet’s Mossley Hill practice in Liverpool, which is already using the bags, said: “I am passionate about sustainability and regard it as one of the most important issues that my generation must tackle. The production of plastic bags generates carbon and they are also harmful to the environment and the wildlife that lives in it.

“From this perspective, our adoption of these new carbon-negative bags is a big step forward in Medivet’s efforts to operate more sustainably. I am proud to be part of a company that is prioritising urgent progress in this area and our clients’ response to this initiative has been very positive.”

Dr Chris Wright, Medivet’s Commercial Director, added: “Environmental initiatives such as this are key to helping Medivet to become more sustainable. It’s great to be working with like-minded organisations, such as Animalcare and Pioneer, on this project.  It builds on the successful PPE recycling scheme we launched in all of our practices last year and is the next step in the delivery of our environmental strategy.”

Kai Crawshaw, UK Sustainability Lead at Animalcare, said: “Medivet’s commitment to adopt this packaging is a step forward for the whole veterinary sector and will help drive the further change so necessary to increase the sustainability of the industry.  As a carbon-neutral business, we were happy to support this project and hope it will contribute to the creation of a better and more environmentally-friendly future for all of us.”
