THE pioneering veterinary work of VetPartners Director of Clinical Research and Excellence in Practice Dr Rachel Dean has seen her made a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (FRCVS).

Dr Dean has been awarded a Fellowship, which recognises outstanding contributions to the veterinary profession, for her Meritorious Contributions to Clinical Practice (MCCP).

As well as being Director of Clinical Research and Excellence in Practice, she has a key role at VetPartners where she is part the Senior Management Team at one of Europe’s leading veterinary groups and also chairs their Clinical Board.

Dr Dean is renowned for her pioneering and forward-thinking work in the field of evidence-based veterinary medicine (EBVM) and championed its uptake in clinical veterinary practice, both in the UK and across Europe.

She is passionate about generating relevant evidence to help members of the veterinary profession challenge the status quo and push the boundaries of clinical veterinary medicine to benefit the profession, patients and clients. She was also founding President of the Association of Charity Vets and Editor-in-Chief or the BSAVA’s Manual of Shelter Medicine.

Dr Dean joined VetPartners in 2018 from the University of Nottingham, where she was the founding director of the Centre for Evidence-based Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Associate Professor of Feline Medicine.

Qualifying in 1996, she holds a Masters in evidence-based medicine, a PhD in epidemiology and a Diploma in feline medicine and is a senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

After becoming a Fellow of the RCVS, she hopes to work with the fellowship to promote EBVM, shelter medicine and champion first opinion practice.

Dr Dean said: “I am interested in joining this group of people that’s become increasingly diverse, and find out what the Fellowship is all about. I’m looking forward to the new challenge this could bring and the potential to challenge a few things too!

“I’m pleased I was successful on Meritorious Contributions to Clinical Practice because I’ve worked in many facets of veterinary practice. I’m passionate about helping to push the EBVM agenda and enabling us to be the best professions we can, ensure we are scientifically led and can be trusted with animal health.

“I feel that by being part of the Fellowship, there is potential to tackle some of the challenges we face as a profession, including making sure the right research is funded and practices receive the information they need and want, but also celebrate general practice.

“I’ve worked in many aspects of clinical practice and now work across all species to help promote and help to progress practice in all aspects of veterinary medicine.”

Led by vets, VetPartners has more than 8,000 employees working across Europe and from its headquarters in York. VetPartners is made up of some of Europe’s most respected and trusted small animal, equine, mixed and farm practices and complimentary businesses.
