Tolracol® Now Licensed For Coccidiosis Prevention In Beef Calves

Krka UK has announced a licence extension for Tolracol® 50 mg/ml oral suspension for pigs, cattle and sheep (toltrazuril). Previously licensed for use in dairy calves, Tolracol® can now also be used in suckler and bull beef calves, widening prevention options for coccidiosis across the beef sector.
Tolracol® is licensed for the prevention of clinical signs of coccidiosis and reduction of oocyst shedding in calves on farms with a confirmed history of coccidiosis caused by Eimeria bovis or Eimeria zuernii.
Coccidiosis can have a considerable impact on calf health and performance, with high parasite burdens causing intestinal damage, clinical disease and reduced growth rates. However, the impact is not always obvious: subclinical infection may affect up to 95% of calves,1 negatively impacting production efficiency even in the absence of overt disease.
Renzo Di Florio, Technical Veterinary Adviser at Krka UK, said: “Coccidiosis management is most effective when we act before intestinal damage and clinical signs have developed. We also know that toltrazuril can rapidly reduce oocyst shedding following treatment, but timing is key. Treating during the prepatent period gives us the opportunity to intervene before clinical disease develops and help manage the infection.”

Under the extended licence, Tolracol® can now be used in suckler calves and bull beef calves from three months of age, alongside its established use in dairy calves. Tolracol® is not licensed for use in veal calves. Refer to the SPC for full details of the licensed indication and dosing.
Tolracol® is administered as a single oral dose of 15 mg toltrazuril/kg bodyweight, equivalent to 3 ml of oral suspension per 10 kg bodyweight. For maximum benefit, calves should be treated during the prepatent period, before the expected onset of clinical signs.
Coccidiosis control should also include appropriate hygiene and management measures to reduce exposure and disease risk.
